FAQ / Contact
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Summer Jazz Factory tuition is $200 for current PALCS/CPFA students and $225 for students not currently enrolled in PALCS/CPFA. Tuition includes instruction, use of CPFA music equipment, a Summer Jazz Factory tee shirt, and the post-concert reception. Students can receive a $25 "Finders Fee" rebate if they bring a friend to enroll in the program. Rebates are issued upon confirmation of their friend's enrollment and participation in at least 2 sessions.
WHICH INSTRUMENTS CAN ENROLL?
Traditional jazz band instruments include saxophone, trumpet, trombone, clarinet and flute for winds, electric guitar, electric bass, upright (acoustic) bass, piano, and drum set for rhythm section. Other band instruments, such as oboe, French horn, euphonium, valve trombone, and tuba can enroll as well. Additionally, bowed string instruments, such as violin, viola, and cello can enroll. String players should carefully consider the prerequisite skills listed on the Registration page, and be prepared to adapt their bowing style to emulate swing, funk, and other styles. Regardless of instrument, ALL STUDENTS MUST BE WILLING TO PERFORM AS AN IMPROVISATIONAL SOLOIST, INCLUDING RHYTHM SECTION (that's what you are here to learn how to do!)
DO STUDENTS HAVE TO BRING THEIR OWN INSTRUMENTS?
CPFA has drum sets, guitar and bass amplifiers, and piano keyboards for use by rhythm section players, as well as one upright bass. All other instruments must be supplied by students. Depending upon enrollment, drummers and guitarists may be asked to bring their own gear.
WHAT IS YOUR ATTENDANCE POLICY?
Summer Jazz Factory meets twice a week for eight sessions, culminating in a concert on the evening of the final (ninth) session. To participate in the concert, students must attend at least five of the eight sessions. Students are encouraged to attend all eight, missing sessions only for family vacation travel or attendance at another one-week music/sports camp. Tuition refunds will not be issued for students who do not meet the minimum attendance requirement.
CAN I PLAY MORE THAN ONE INSTRUMENT?
Secondary instruments are welcome and encouraged for high school students, especially woodwind doublers. Middle school students are encouraged to work only on their primary instrument unless they demonstrate sufficient proficiency on more than one instrument. Depending upon the experience level of the student on their secondary instrument, some high school students are permitted to attend the middle school session on their secondary instrument and the high school session on their primary instrument.
CAN I LEARN A "JAZZ INSTRUMENT" INSTEAD OF PLAYING ON MY PRIMARY INSTRUMENT?
Learning a new instrument during Summer Jazz Factory sessions is not possible. However, our staff can work with you in private instruction outside of sessions. Please contact us for details.
I'M GOING INTO 9TH GRADE IN THE FALL. DO I ENROLL AS A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT OR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT?
Students finishing their eighth grade year who will be in high school in the fall of 2019 have their choice of enrolling as a middle school student, high school student, or both. If enrolling as a high school student, they must meet the eligibility requirements for high school listed above and be prepared for more challenging material and higher expectations.
I AM IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, BUT I ALREADY HAVE STUDIED A LOT OF JAZZ IMPROV. CAN I ENROLL AS A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT?
Maybe. Our staff will assess your skill level and place you in the appropriate sessions.
IS THERE HOMEWORK?
Students enrolled in Summer Jazz Factory will have access to some online resources, such as recordings, practice exercises, etc. Practicing between sessions is HIGHLY recommended to continue to build on the skills we cover during the sessions. Students in the jazz composition/arranging coaching will be expected to work on their compositions and show results if they want their work to be considered for the end of the summer concert.
DOES EVERYONE HAVE TO SOLO?
Yes, but not everyone has to solo during the concert at the end of the season. Improvisation is like anything else - the more you do it, the better you get at it! No prior experience in performing a jazz improvised solo is required to participate in the Summer Jazz Factory program. In fact, it's a great place for students who have never played a solo before to get their feet wet and begin! It's also a great place for experienced improvisors to take their playing to the next level.
DO I HAVE TO PERFORM IN THE CONCERT?
It is assumed that every student will perform in the end of the summer concert, but students are not required to play a solo. To be eligible to perform in the concert, students must have attended in full at least 5 sessions throughout the summer.
WHERE IS THE POST-CONCERT RECEPTION?
The reception for the 2019 summer session will be held at CPFA in the Student Kitchen and Student Lounge.
